When planning all your home and choosing furniture it doesn't matter if you're remodeling your existing home or preparing for a new one you should consider how much time you are going to spend taking care of it. If you are staying at home a lot and you love cleaning your home you are very flexible with it and don't need to think about it too much. If you are a busy person and want to have your home clean all the time - keep reading.
And still most of us are very busy - work in the office, taking care of kids and pets, things we do in the evenings outside of our home and after all cleaning your home is the least exciting thing to do. I am not saying that following some basic rules will give you the opportunity to do nothing, but for sure it will help a lot. I am the kind of person who believes that my home should be working for me and not the other way around and I know how challenging it can be to keep my home tidy during all busy weeks, so here are some things which help me a lot.
1. I say big "NO" for classic style. It might look really great, but all these forms, frames, corners and handles are asking just too much time for cleaning. Instead I feel much better with plain furniture, profile handles in the kitchen as these are not sticking outside of the countertop so most of the falling liquid from hands don't cover all these masterpiece handles and are much easier to clean. Frameless fronts of furniture allows me to clean it in one move.
2. Wall mount, high legs or leaving no space to floor furniture. As we have Labrador retriever our house is vacuumed every day by our best friend robot vacuum cleaner so spaces between floor and furniture should be high enough for our robot to go under it, or there should be no space so all the hair are not going under it and it doesn't need to be cleaned every time. All the furniture having small space to ground is always collecting all the dust, it is always visible and to clean under you have to move these furniture.
3. It looks really cozy and nice with these high fluffy rugs and carpets, but cleaning these after kids playing or pets are just too big a challenge for me and again it won't be cleaned by robot vacuum cleaner so I am not getting one for me even if it would be great at my home.
4. For the same reasons I don't like trending metal crossed table legs or classic ones. I just know that I should clean the floor by myself as my robot has no way to clean everything between the legs. Also these collect a lot of dust in crossing parts corners.
5. Big floor to ceiling mirrors and glass shower walls are NO for me as well. Shower glass should be cleaned often to look nice as there are always water marks after having a shower, kids and pets leave their fingerprints and other stuff on every surface they touch and it is best visible on mirrors! I prefer having a wall style separator for my shower or if you still want glass, choose a plain one without frames and no curved doors in your shower if you have the opportunity. My big mirrors are hanging lifted from the ground. This helps a bit to have them clean for a longer time. Also I love how this type of mirror with some cabinets and shelves looks, but it has pretty much no purpose except the design and is more complicated for cleaning.
6. No floor standing lamps. I try to have as few things as possible in my home standing on the floor and prefer wall mounted solutions instead. More things on the floor, more dust and hairs stuck under and between legs and bottom.
7. Countertop mounted bowl form sinks look really amazing in every design, but cleaning all the countertop around is not something I want to do so I prefer ducked sinks instead and there are a lot of great options to find something looking great in your design.
8. Classic style faucets need more time for cleaning while you get every corner shinny. Best option for me is wall mounted modern style as less as possible corners having faucets so if you have opportunity to choose I would definitely go with this option.
9. Freestanding bathtub, especially rounded corners next to the wall and floor mounted faucet creates just too many corners in the room hard to be reached to clean.
10. Decoration of your home - go with paintings, create nice decor with lightning, some plants, bookshelves but avoid collecting all small things standing on shelves you have collected when traveling. I know it brings some nice memories back, but it doesn't help to create a nice design for your home, is useless and needs to be lifted every time to clean surfaces. Next time when traveling, consider things which can be used - maybe some nice handmade bowls for fruits, some candle holders for romantic dinner, tableware, soap dispensers, small boxes to keep makeup in, nice towels or blankets to fulfill your home or anything else you can actually use.
11. Wall mount toilet is the best as soon as it comes to cleaning. This kind of toilet doesn't have a lot of corners or hidden spots so it is easy to clean it. Also it looks really modern so if you have the opportunity to get rid of your old style toilet - do it.
12. Materials at your home. Always check for some extra information about the tiles, flooring, countertops, wall decorations and soft furniture fabrics if these are easy to clean. Plan all the electric sockets for your new home very carefully to avoid all the wires around your home and better use sockets with covers at your kitchen instead of opened ones.
I am hoping that all these tips will help you with decisions. Just don't forget it is only tips and you don't have to follow all of them. If you really love something from this "time consuming cleaning list" you should get it. Don't give up all your home design and feeling for easy care.
